Buying a used valve amp without the nasty surprises
Valve amps hide their problems better than guitars do. Here's exactly what to check — tubes, transformers, hum and hidden repairs — before you hand over the cash.
Why valve amps are different
A guitar wears its condition on the outside. A valve amp doesn't: the expensive, failure-prone parts are sealed inside a hot metal box, and a tired amp can sound fine for the first two minutes in a shop and fall apart on the gig. The good news is that a ten-minute check catches almost everything that matters.
None of this needs test gear. It needs your ears, your nose, and a willingness to actually turn the amp up before you buy it.
Before you plug in
Look it over cold. A faint smell of cooked electronics, scorch marks on the chassis, or a sticky brown residue under the valves all point to a hard life. Give it a gentle shake: loose rattles inside can be a valve out of its socket, or worse, a transformer bolt that's worked free.
Ask the age of the valves and whether it's been re-biased since. 'I put new tubes in last year' with no mention of biasing is a small red flag — the wrong bias eats power valves and can sound harsh.
The valves
Powered on in a dim room, the valves should glow a soft orange on the heaters. A valve glowing cherry-red on the plate (the internal metal structure) is running away and will fail soon — walk away or budget for a re-tube and bias.
Blue-ish glow inside the glass is normal and harmless. Purple glow, or a bright internal arc, is not. Tap each valve gently with a pencil while the amp is quiet: loud ringing or crackle through the speaker means a microphonic valve, cheap to replace but worth knowing.
Transformers and hum
The transformers are the heart of the amp and the costliest thing to replace. With the amp on and volume down, listen close: a steady mechanical buzz from the chassis itself (not the speaker) can mean a failing transformer or loose laminations.
Some hum through the speaker at high volume is normal; a loud, constant hum that doesn't change with the volume control points to filter capacitors past their life. Recapping is routine on an old amp, but it's a cost — factor it in.
Turn it up
Play it at a real volume, not a whisper. Roll the volume and tone controls through their full sweep listening for crackle or dead spots — scratchy pots are cheap, but an intermittent crackle that comes and goes with vibration can be a dry solder joint or a failing valve.
Work the reverb, the tremolo, the effects loop and every input jack. Wiggle each cable at the socket: silence should stay silence. Switching channels should be clean, not a loud thump that suggests a tired relay or footswitch circuit.
Hidden repairs and mods
Ask to see inside if you can. Neat factory wiring is reassuring; a bird's nest of mismatched components and blobby solder means someone's been in there, and not always well. Mods aren't automatically bad, but they change the value and should be disclosed.
On GearHub, check the serial against the register before money changes hands, and ask the seller to transfer the item's provenance to you at the sale so its history — including any of this — travels with the amp.
The deal
Price in what you found. New power valves and a bias, or a recap, are normal maintenance on an old amp, not a reason to panic — but they're your money, so they come off the asking price.
Get the sale in writing with the serial number, and register it to your collection the moment it's yours. A logged amp with its history attached is worth more when you come to sell it on.
